Juvenile Sentenced to 10 Weeks

A 17-year-old male has been sentenced to 10 weeks in HMP Windmill Hill after pleading guilty to a number of traffic offences.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at the Juvenile Court yesterday afternoon.

The incident happened just after 1am on Tuesday 13 July, when a member of the public called the Royal Gibraltar Police Control Room, to report that her mother had almost been hit by a Gibraltar plated vehicle on Flat Bastion Road.

Shortly after, the Gibraltar Defence Police also contacted the RGP, stating that they had observed the same vehicle driving erratically and at speeds of about 100kph without its lights on, swerving from side to side along Winston Churchill Avenue.

A GDP vehicle then pursued the vehicle, which was then seen to lose control while attempting to turn left at the roundabout on Devils Tower Road, outside the Holiday Inn Express Hotel.

Due to its speed, the vehicle collided against a central reservation and came to a stop.

The vehicle, which had been stolen, was extensively damaged.

The juvenile, who then attempted to re-start the vehicle, was taken out of the vehicle by GDP officers and arrested by RGP officers, for a number of offences, including possession of 39.3 grams of cannabis.

At New Mole House Police station, the teenager told officers he had taken “pills” and then refused to provide a specimen of blood, which would have shown whether he had been under the influence of drink or drugs.

Yesterday, he was sentenced to:

  • One month for Dangerous Driving
  • One month for a second count of Dangerous Driving (to be served concurrently)
  • One month consecutive for Taking a Conveyance
  • A further two weeks for Possession of Cannabis
  • No Separate Penalty for Driving Whilst Under Age
  • No Separate Penalty for No Insurance
  • No Separate Penalty for Failing to Provide a Blood Specimen

If anyone has concerns about a person drink or drug-driving, they can call the RGP in confidence on 200 72500 or 199 in emergencies.
