Roads Policing Unit

Resolving traffic issues in Gibraltar remains a priority for the RGP.  Through collaborative work with HM Government of Gibraltar’s Ministry of Transport and Traffic, the unit is a vital component in the implementation of the Sustainable Transport and Traffic Management plan.

The core responsibility of the RGP’s Roads Policing Unit is the enforcement of road traffic offences under the umbrella of Operation Roadwatch, and educating drivers to ensure better road safety. The Roads Policing Unit’s additional duties include operational functionality of the static speed cameras, safe escorts of oversized vehicles and hazardous loads, the liaison point for road closures and diversions as well as playing a vital role in the myriad of community events.

Roads Policing officers are licensed to drive all categories of vehicles and are trained in the use of approved equipment designed for the enforcement of drink and drug driving laws, as well as other specific road traffic offences. Some officers are qualified Police Response Driving Trainers and they deliver in-house training to all police drivers to ensure the highest standards of driving. A select number of officers within this unit are specialised in the forensic investigation of road traffic collisions.
