Detectives from the RGP’s Economic Crime Unit are warning the public to be on their guard against a scam targeting social media users in Gibraltar.
The news comes after reports that people on social media apps including Facebook are having their accounts cloned by scammers.
The fraudsters are then targeting local members of the public who are friends with the victims and asking for passwords and personal details – in order to commit fraud.
An RGP spokesperson said: “We advise members of the public to be wary of requests on social media appearing to be from friends or family asking for personal details, passwords or banking information. We’re asking for people to inform their friends and family that this scam is happening on the Rock and to be on their guard.”
Anyone who thinks they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact the RGP on 200 72500 or report it online at www.police.gi/report/crime
