Event management fraudster arrested by RGP sentenced at Supreme Court

Emily Brown the British national who had pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud by false representation dating back to offences from 2014 in relation to her event planning business in Gibraltar, was sentenced at the Supreme Court yesterday.

She was handed 18 weeks imprisonment suspended for six months and to repay compensation of £11,520 to the aggrieved party.

The 36 year old defendant defrauded Bwin.Party, now known as GVC, of £11,520 purportedly for the organisation of a Christmas party and hotel accommodation at the Sunborn in 2014, monies which were never paid to the floating hotel.

After committing the offences Brown left Gibraltar for several years and was arrested by the RG Police on her return in early 2017.

The case was investigated by the Fraud Squad of the Economic Crime Unit, RGP.

Detective Sergeant Cavallo Soane of the Fraud Squad said: “We are pleased with the outcome as the victim in this case, GVC, has been awarded compensation by the court. The defendant had left the jurisdiction and the case was left pending but as soon as she returned to Gibraltar she was arrested and later charged. This case underlines the nature of police work and the perseverance that is required to achieve a successful outcome to an investigation.”

Carl Ramagge appeared for the Crown and Simon Diable for the defendant. Puisne Judge Mr Justice Butler presided over proceedings.
